Over the past decade, the hospitality industry has been swept up in the allure of storytelling through travel. Platforms like Airbnb, Travelocity, Expedia, and Lonely Planet have spun tales that celebrate the wonder of exploration, casting each journey as a modern-day Odyssey. But today, the narrative is deepening. Hotel guest engagement has evolved from simply telling stories to inviting travelers to step inside them. This shift, says hospitality expert Melissa Houghton, has resulted in architects and designers working for hotel brands like Marriott and Hilton to invest in experiential hospitality strategies heavily.

“The evolution from storytelling to “story-living” asks brands to become authors of memory itself,” says Houghton. “As a result, top hotel brands are crafting moments vivid enough to be retold long after the suitcase is unpacked. That starts at design.”

The ability to immerse into a lived stories ripples outward, says Houghton, transforming into glowing reviews, authentic word-of-mouth, and the kind of loyalty that keeps travelers returning for the next chapter.

Experiential Hospitality: The Key to Hotel Guest Engagement

Immersive travel is reshaping the entire industry. By 2025, the immersive experience market reached close to $144.17 billion, with rapid growth continuing through 2030. Reviews and surveys covering over 39 million guests show a major uptick in satisfaction when experiences are personalized and participatory. Behind the numbers lies a clear truth: travelers don’t just want to hear stories, they want to live them.

The best hotel brands have responded to this call, with design concepts and programming around experiential activities and guest engagement. Here are some of the most exceptional examples of story-living in action, and what hotels, resorts, cruises, and casinos can learn from them.

Hotel Guests Want to Experience Culture Firsthand

andBeyond Bateleur Camp, located in Kenya, Masai Mara, is consistently ranked No. 1, and renowned for safari immersion. From private game drives to bush banquets to tented luxury that’s woven into the landscape, guests have the opportunity to appreciate local Maasai culture.

Natural Habitat Adventures from Alaska & Arctic Expeditions has a similar (but colder) opportunity for tourists. Guided by a local Alaska Native expert, guests stay in remote eco-lodges or expedition camps. Activities include traditional fishing, storytelling, dog sledding, and learning about subsistence lifestyles and the unique culture of the Inuit, Inupiat, and Gwich’in.

Why it matters: Guests don’t just witness cultures, they become part of them, creating deeply personal stories that inspire sharing and loyalty long after the trip ends.

Hotel Sustainability Needs to go Beyond Sensors

In one of our recent posts, we highlighted stadiums imitating natural shapes, specifically highlighting Estádio Municipal de Braga in Braga, Portugal. Built into the side of a mountain, the stadium fully immerses itself into its surroundings. In the same spirit, hotels are transforming ordinary structures into extraordinary experiences.

InterContinental Khao Yai Resort in Thailand transformed converted vintage railcars into luxury suites. Stockholm’s Jumbo Stay turned a Boeing 747 into a boutique hotel, while The Silo Hotel in Cape Town rises from a historic grain elevator. While not as dramatic but equally effective, the Hyatt in Nashville is railway themed (without actually being in the style of a train), and features a departure-board inspired Picture Flap display.

Why it matters: Repurposed structures give guests a sense of novelty, turning buildings into stages where guests become part of the narrative.

Each carriage immerses guests in the romance of historic rail travel with even the smallest details such as globe lighting, leather seating, and nostalgic styling inviting travelers to feel part of the journey. We added one of our Split Flap display installations (at Union Station Hotel in Nashville) for further transit-inspired inspiration.

Eco Skill Building at Hotels and Resorts Is Here to Stay

Eco-tourism is exploding, quickly expanding to include eco skill building. Saffire Freycinet, a luxury, carbon-neutral eco-lodge in Freycinet National Park, is committed to habitat restoration, local sourcing, and Aboriginal cultural experiences — and offers hiking, beekeeping, and oyster farming lessons to their guests.

UnCruise Adventures, small-group expeditions to Alaska, Baja California, Hawaii, and the Galápagos, also offer hands-on exploration, wildlife observation, education with naturalists. While not as luxurious and more adventure focused, the experience still allows guests to build useful skills in nature.

Why it matters: Eco skill building transforms travelers into co-creators of their journey, walking away with new abilities and stories of self-discovery.

Interiors blur boundaries between inside and outside, with rich Tasmanian oak, smooth stone walls, neutral linens, and large windows with natural light.

Fan-Centric Themes Are Red Hot Hospitality Tactics

There’s nothing a superfan loves more than immersion and for fast-thinking brands, it can be a real opportunity to draw in guests. Castle Leslie in Ireland is one example, offering “Bridgerton Hotel Breaks” with Regency-themed activities: spa treatments, horse riding, falconry, archery, and afternoon tea.

Star Trek: The Cruise VIII was launched in 2025 from Royal Caribbean), a themed entertainment cruise that includes cast Q&As, costume parties, workshops, and NASA guest speakers: a dream for superfans. Mattel also recently introduced the UNO Social Club at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, an immersive fan experience built around the beloved card game.

Why it matters: These themes invite guests to step inside the worlds they already love, transforming passive fandom into active community.

“Time” Travel Themes Is A Tourism (and Hotel Design) Must-Do

Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs, located in Calistoga, CA, is a spa resort similarly revamped to evoke old roots, with mid-century furnishings, mosaics, classic signage, and a replica of the original ’52 Buick at the entrance.

Why it matters: Nostalgia builds emotional resonance, encouraging repeat visits and cross-generational appeal.

Seasonal and “Holiday” Travel Capitalizes on Feel-Good Cheer

For a creepier crowd, Halloween on the High Seas from Disney Cruise Line runs annually in September-October. Full-ship transformation with spooky décor, themed deck parties, trick-or-treating, character meet-and-greets, and adults-only costume extravaganzas round out this unique experience. Universal Studios in Florida also runs an annual Mardi Gras celebration.

Why it matters: Guests don’t just observe the holiday spirit: they step into it. Each market stop becomes part of a larger festive journey, where the scent of mulled wine, the glow of lanterns, and the sound of choirs weave together into a story they’ll carry home.
