Which Installation Style Fits Your Space?

Each Split Flap installation style offers a unique and architectural way to integrate analog signage and displays into your space. Here’s an overview of each installation style.

  • Recessed installations create a seamless, architectural look by embedding the display in the wall
  • Surface-mounted Split Flaps prioritize visibility and easy installation
  • Ceiling-mounted signs are designed for long sightlines and high-traffic environments
  • Freestanding installations offer flexibility and mobility without relying on existing structures
  • L-shaped configurations anchor feature walls, using multiple viewing angles
  • Custom installations adapt the display’s form, scale, and placement to the environment’s specific spatial and experiential needs

Recessed Signage

What it is: Integrated into walls or custom millwork, recessed Split Flap installations deliver a refined, architectural look. By sitting flush with surrounding surfaces, the display becomes a natural extension of the space.

Great for: Commercial lobbies and offices, as pictured above at the Walker Center lobby or for custom bar installations, as shown at The Irish Exit.

Surface-Mounted Installations

What it is: Surface-mounted Split Flap installations can be placed directly on nearly any wall type. For retrofits or spaces with limited depth, this installation style showcases our kinetic displays as a standalone design feature in hospitality or commercial spaces.

Great for: As pictured with the colorful Crust & Crumb cafe menu, as well as the Filter Club above, surface-mounted installations work well as restaurants and bar menus, reception desk signage, luxury retail displays, and more.

Hanging Signage

What it is: Suspended from the ceiling, hanging Split Flap signage makes a striking statement in open spaces such as lobbies, atriums, galleries, and retail environments. They draw the eye upward and creates a key focal point visible from multiple angles.

Great for: This versatile and interesting style, as shown in this Dara Vandor Search Portrait exhibit, is a great fit for schools, transit halls, universities, or museums.

Freestanding & Floating Signage

What it is: When walls aren’t available, or mobility is key, a freestanding Split Flap sign provides flexibility. These can be built into custom enclosures or stands to move where the action is, perfect for events, exhibitions, or fun pop-up activations.

Great for: Perfect as an experiential marketing activation, one of the best uses we’ve seen is at Grand Central Station in New York; it was a versatile and fun way to draw attention to Palm Beach’s flights from JFK.

L-Shaped Split Flap Installations

What it is: We can build Split Flap installations to “frame” coffee or cocktail bars in an L-shape, creating a one-of-a-kind architectural feature to drive focus and attention to your menu. List out menu items and provide brand messaging on one large-scale display.

Great for: An immersive “feature” corner, ideal for busy public spaces such as lobbies and transit halls that require multi-angle viewing. This L-shaped cafe menu sign, located on campus at Samsung near King’s Cross in London, is a great example of innovative experiential design in action.

Angled Signs & Custom Installations

What it is: Whether you’re working within architectural constraints or pursuing a bold creative vision, our team ensures your Split Flap or Picture Flap fits beautifully, both functionally and aesthetically. Learn how analog tech can tell your unique brand story!

Great for: From angled mounts to curved surfaces, we can tailor installations to meet your design intent, as seen at the LA Philharmonic.

Bespoke Signage: Intentional, Not Imposed

In our experience, the best signage doesn’t compete with a room: it belongs to it. Integrated seamlessly into the environment, it communicates meaning, mood, and identity, quietly telling the story of the space and the people who use it. Here are some great examples of Oat Foundry’s analog signage at work.

Julith Coffee: Wall Mounted Menu

7 Rows x 32 Columns in Enterprise Custom Color

At Julith Coffee in Dubai, every aspect of the interior expresses the brand’s mastery of coffee, culture, and design. Mounted directly on a smooth concrete wall, the custom Split Flap display appears to float slightly above the surface, with a flush, bracketed mounting system that cleverly conceals hardware and power connections to preserve seamless architectural integration.

Encased in the brand’s cobalt-blue signature hue, the display creates a vivid visual contrast that draws attention as it cycles through curated menus, affirmations, and messages. The kinetic feature forms a centerpiece of the brand, helping every guest feel connected to Julith’s ethos of craft, community, and creative exploration. Brand images courtesy of Julith Coffee.

More than décor, the Picture Flap and surrounding architectural details work together to help every current or prospective student feel like part of the story. Images courtesy of the University of Arizona.
